Best Things To Do in Dubrovnik When It Rains (Local Guide 2026)
Home Born and raised in Dubrovnik, I’ve experienced every weather mood this city can throw at you — from blazing summer heat to strong coastal winds and long stretches of
Yes — Dubrovnik can be an amazing family destination if you plan around heat, stairs, and peak crowds. With the right planning, Dubrovnik family travel can be both fun and stress-free. You’ll get castles-and-walls vibes, beaches, boat rides, islands with wildlife, and plenty of “reward stops” (gelato, pancakes, playgrounds) to keep kids happy.
This guide is written from a local parent perspective (I have two kids). It’s packed with practical tips (stroller reality checks, where to go when it’s too hot, and how to dodge the busiest hours), plus the best activities for toddlers, kids, and teens.
For a wider overview of the city, start with our full guide to the best things to do in Dubrovnik, then use this family guide to plan kid-friendly days.
Quick disclosure: We run Puzzle Punks / Dubrovnik Escape Room, and this guide includes our escape room as one option among many (we’ll also give you lots of free and non-commercial ideas).
If you only do five family activities in Dubrovnik, choose:
Local family tip: Plan outdoor sightseeing early, take a beach or indoor break in the middle of the day, and return outside in the evening.
Dubrovnik is easiest with kids when you plan your days around three things: heat, stairs, and crowds. The city is compact and beautiful, but summer afternoons, cruise crowds, and Old Town steps can quickly turn family sightseeing into an emotional meltdown.
Here are the local tips that will save you time and energy (and your family sanity).
Dubrovnik’s Old Town is compact, so it can feel very crowded when several cruise ships arrive at the same time. Before choosing your main Old Town day, check the current cruise schedule and plan your busiest sightseeing outside peak arrival hours.
Local tip: If the schedule looks heavy, do Lapad, Lokrum, the beach, or an indoor activity during the busiest hours, then return to Old Town later in the day.
With kids, the best Old Town window is early morning (before the day heats up and before tour groups peak). The second-best is late afternoon/evening, when it cools down and the light is gorgeous.
Parking is limited, expensive, and stressful around the Old Town. If you’re staying outside, it’s usually easier to take a bus or taxi/Uber and save your energy for exploring.
Dubrovnik Old Town is beautiful, but it is not stroller-perfect. The main street, Stradun, is flat, but many side streets have steep stone stairs and uneven surfaces.
For babies and toddlers, the easiest options are:
With kids, one great sight plus one easy reward stop usually beats a packed checklist.
Bring refillable bottles — Dubrovnik has fountains and the tap water is safe. Add hats, sunscreen, and “shade breaks” (Lokrum, parks, Lapad promenade).
Old Town stone can get slippery — especially after rain. Comfortable shoes with grip will save you.
If you’ll use cars/taxis, plan ahead. Seat belts and child restraint systems are mandatory in Croatia (with limited exceptions depending on vehicle type and situation).
Safest options for families:
Do not travel with small children unrestrained — it’s unsafe.
If you plan to do the Walls + a museum or two (and use buses), the Dubrovnik Pass is often good value. The official pass includes City Walls, museums/galleries, and public transport access depending on duration. Prices and inclusions vary by season, so check the official site before buying.
For a full breakdown, read our guide: is the Dubrovnik Pass worth it?

Old Town Dubrovnik is best with kids early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the streets are cooler and less crowded. The area is car-free, full of fortress views, and easy to turn into a “castle hunt” for younger children.
Families with toddlers should know that Old Town has many stairs and uneven stone streets. A baby carrier is often easier than a stroller, especially if you plan to explore side streets or walk the City Walls.
Best for: babies, kids and teens
Good to know: Go early, keep the route short, and use gelato as emotional support. No shame. It works.
The entire Old Town is kid-friendly as no cars are allowed on the streets so you can have a stress-free stroll with your little ones. As soon as you walk through the drawbridge into Old town, you will feel like you stepped into a castle.
The place is very scenic and abundant with postcard photo material. Our favourite picture spots are Pile Bay with Lovrijenac fort, Porporela pier next to Old Harbour and the stone bridge on Ploče Gate.
Best for: kids, and teens
Good to know: The full walk can take around 1.5 hours with children, so you do not have to complete the entire loop.
The Dubrovnik City Walls are one of the most memorable family activities in Dubrovnik, especially for kids who enjoy castles, cannons, sea views, and real-life history. The walk is beautiful but exposed, so timing matters.
The walk takes around 1.5 hrs (1 hr for adults) and is included in the Dubrovnik pass. You don’t have to do the whole loop if you get tired, as there are multiple entrances to the city walls.

If going on the Dubrovnik city walls with kids, we recommend starting at Ploče gate, not Pile gate, for numerous reasons:
The best time to visit Dubrovnik city walls in the summer is definitely early morning or just before close.
Since there is a lot of walking (and probably sun) involved, make sure to have lots of water (expensive to buy on the city walls) and potentially some snacks for the little ones.
Best for: Babies, kids, and teens
Good to know: Very useful after the City Walls. Strategic gelato is a valid parenting technique.
Peppino’s is one of the most popular gelato stops in Dubrovnik Old Town. It is close enough to Ploče Gate to work well as a post-walls reward, especially if your kids need motivation to finish the walk.
Best for: Babies, kids, and teens
Good to know: Lokrum is one of the best hot-day activities in Dubrovnik with kids because it offers shade, swimming spots, wildlife, and space to move.
Lokrum Island is a short boat ride from Dubrovnik Old Port and feels like a nature reset after the busy stone streets of Old Town. Families love it because kids can spot peacocks, explore shady paths, swim, and take a break from crowds.
The boat for Lokrum goes from the Old port and is only a 15 min ride away from Old Town. You can check the boat schedule online. Lokrum is a real natural paradise, a UNESCO-protected nature reserve ,which makes it a great day trip destination for families.
This beautiful island is a perfect escape from the city heat and crowds since it’s filled with trees and shady pathways, with plenty of room to move around.
Your kids will love to see the peacocks running freely around. They are used to people, so maybe you can even make some new friends as they are not too shy.
There is plenty to see on Lokrum, so you easily plan to spend half a day here. Besides visiting the botanical gardens and the Monastery, our favourite is the exhibition on Lokrum curse and King Richard the Lionheart shipwreck.
Game of Thrones fans can also see the Iron Throne exhibition on Lokrum. If your family has older kids or teens who are interested in filming locations, you may also like our full Game of Thrones guide to Dubrovnik.

Go swimming in the dead sea, snorkelling and exploring the sea life, play in the kids park or just hide in the shades of the forest and enjoy the serenity of this island. Indeed it is a true gem & our favourite thing to do in Dubrovnik with kids!
Best for: Toddlers, younger kids, and curious school-age children
Good to know: These are short, easy indoor stops, not full half-day museums.
Although modest, the Aquarium’s cool location in the stone vaults of St. John’s Fortress makes it a nice escape from the crowds and heat of the city. Expect to spend 20-30 minutes observing diverse Adriatic flora and fauna such as lobsters, octopus, seahorses, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, shells and crabs.
The Natural History Museum is another good choice for younger kids. It is bigger than the Aquarium, easy to visit, and has different animals on display. This works well when you need a short indoor break without committing to a long museum visit.
Best for: Toddlers, younger kids, and curious school-age children
Good to know: Come a few minutes before 12:00
Every day exactly at 12:00, when the bell strikes, hundreds of pigeons land on Gundulic square (old town market place) & wait for their lunch. Come a bit earlier to see them nesting on the rooftops and eagerly awaiting. The locals bring a bucket of grains and the entire scene is spectacular to see.

Best for: Kids and teens who like animals
Good to know: Cats are well taken care off
There are plenty of cats everywhere, they are friendly and love to be pet. The cats in Old Town are well cared for and healthy enough so you can feel comfortable interacting with them.
Fun local fact: Dubrovnik cats are one of the oldest residents of the city as they were introduced in the 14th century when Dubrovnik was a major trading port between Europe and the Ottoman empire. The cats greatly helped fight the plague by killing the rats that spread the disease. That’s the main reason why the cats are well fed and respected!
Best for: Babies, kids
Good to know: There is shade you can hide in while your kids play
Pile Park has been completely renovated and recently opened. It’s a brilliant new playground right next to Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
The park features a unique “mini Dubrovnik” play structure inspired by the city’s fortifications, along with shaded paths, seating, greenery, and space for families to relax while kids climb and explore. There’s also an interactive Ruđer Bošković installation under the bridge, which adds an educational twist to the visit
Best for: Babies, kids, teens
Good to know: *Gradac park is under construction and not open for visitors in 2026*
If you are looking for shade, go to Gradac park, that is a 10 minute stroll from the Old Town. When you walk up the hill, you will have beautiful views of Fort Lovrijenac.
There is a brand new playground planned (currenly under construction) and it is a nice escape from the city hustle and a good place to let your kids roam around free. At the beginning of the park is a small fountain with turtles swimming in it. The forest provides enough shade for a pleasant walk during a hot summer day, while soaking up the view of the Adriatic.

Best for: babies, kids and teens
Good to know: You can take a taxi/uber to the top (if you or the kids are nervous about heights).
For a breathtaking view of the city, take a cable car ride up to Mount Srd. The ride is quick and takes only a few minutes, but it offers an unforgettable panoramic view of Dubrovnik’s old town and the Adriatic Sea. Your kids will love the cable car ride and the views from the top.
Best for: Kids and teens
Good to know: Adventuruous activity that might get you a bit dusty. Dont wear your nicest clothes.
Older kids (10+) might enjoy a more adventurous Dubrovnik activity. Take them to Buggy Safari, on top of Srdj, a thrilling ride where you get to explore ancient fortresses and the countryside.
Best for: Kids and teens
Good to know: Even small children can go (in tandem), provided they are brave enough.
Zipline on top of Srdj mountain offers breathtaking views together with an andrenaline rush. It is a family-friendly activity suitable even for smaller children, as they get all the necessary gear and safety training.
If you need a break from heat or walking, a 60-minute escape room can be the perfect family reset — especially for kids 8+ and teens.
Puzzle Punks Dubrovnik Escape Room is an indoor, story-driven, and family-friendly activity. Located in Lapad, about 10 minutes from Dubrovnik Old Town. Booking ahead is strongly recommended in summer.
Lapad is one of the best areas of Dubrovnik for families because it is more relaxed, more spacious, and easier with kids than the Old Town. You’ll find a seaside promenade, beaches, cafés, playground-style activities, sunset spots, and more room for children to move around.
As local parents, Lapad is one of our favorite parts of Dubrovnik with kids because it gives you the thing every family eventually needs: space.
For a deeper neighborhood guide, read our full guide to what to do in Lapad, Dubrovnik.
Lapad is about 3 km from Dubrovnik Old Town. The easiest options are:
Best for: Kids, teens, parents and groups
Good to know: Best for hot afternoons, rainy days, or when everyone needs a break from sightseeing.
Puzzle Punks Escape Room in Lapad is a fun indoor activity for families who want something more interactive than another museum or beach stop. Instead of watching or listening, everyone gets involved: solving clues, finding hidden details, communicating, and working together before time runs out.
For families, Dubrovnik Legends is usually the best choice. It is inspired by local stories and Dubrovnik history, so kids can enjoy the challenge while also getting a playful sense of the city.
Older kids, teens, and Game of Thrones fans may prefer Save King’s Landing, a Game of Thrones-inspired escape room experience.
Why families like it:
Booking ahead is recommended in summer, especially on rainy days.
Parents and children really do love this one! This is your opportunity to bond over a shared challenge, to have fun together and create lasting memories.
An absolute dream for any Game of Thrones fan & must to activity in Dubrovnik

Best suited for kids 3-10 years old, expect to find many coin operated kiddie rides from horses, to dinosaurs, helicopters, motors and cars. Whether your kids are into small merry-go rides or into hammering in a whack a mole arcade game, it will surely be hard to leave this place. Expect to spend at least 30 minutes and a good amount of coins here.
If you have older kids they can either test the strength of their kicks in football kicking or sit back and ride in a racing video game.
There is no better way to tire a kid than to involve them in some physical activity. A floating playground of slides, trampolines, and bounce‐houses—perfect for burning off energy.
Visit the one and only sweet bar with bubble waffles and churros in Dubrovnik.
Think bubble waffles met ice cream’s cooler, trendier cousin—and had a delicious baby. Choose from Oreo, Snickers, or Raffaello flavors, watch your fruit and sweets get crushed, swirled into ice‑cold milk on a frozen slab, then rolled into perfect bite‑sized tubes.
It’s equal parts dessert theater and sweet tooth nirvana—don’t miss it on your family lap around Lapad!
Experience the magic of cinema under the stars at the Summer Cinema Lapad. Watch international movies in their original language, usually with Croatian subtitles. Tickets are incredibly affordable at just 2 euros.
If you have more than two days in Dubrovnik, it is worth adding one easy family trip outside the city. The best options near Dubrovnik with kids are island beaches, countryside activities, caves, and adventure parks.
Choose only one bigger outing per day. With children, a slower day trip is usually much better than trying to squeeze in three “quick stops.”
Take a 1 hour boat ride from Gruž port to Lopud island (check the daily departures schedule) . No cars are allowed on the island, so you can truly relax & enjoy the nature. Take a stroll to the other side of the island (or hire a golf cart) in order to discover the best sandy beach in the whole county – Šunj beach.
Kids will love this beautiful sandy beach, because it is very shallow so they will have plenty of space to run and splash around. Take snorkelling gear, rent a kayak or pedal boats, swim and dive or just hide in the shade of parasols or the local bar, while your kids roam around joyously.
This family friendly beach is the locals favourite place to escape Dubrovnik in the summer.
Go to Kojan Koral in Konavle and choose your type of adventure activitiy: whether its horseback riding, ATV quad safari or buggy safari. Younger kids can enjoy meeting different animals living there: the horses, donkey, goats and chicken.
Beat the heat and dive underground—literally. At a refreshing 16 °C, this limestone labyrinth of stalactites and hidden grottoes feels like nature’s very own air‑conditioned playground. Kids will love playing “lost treasure hunters” among dripping rock curtain and echoing chambers.
Adventure park in Konavle, Cadmos Village, is fun for the whole family. Stay in the first treehouse in Croatia and enjoy fresh air on a 7m high open terrace and beautiful views of Konavle valley. Try homemade specialties and local wines in the family restaurant.
Adrenaline lovers will certainly enjoy park features and activities: 4 zip lines, giant swing, slingshot, fields for archery and paintball, sack jumping, pulling the rope, biking… This family activity is near Dubrovnik, around 30 minutes driving north.
The best beaches in Dubrovnik for kids are usually in Lapad and Babin Kuk, where families will find calmer swimming areas, more space, nearby cafés, and easier beach access than around the crowded Old Town. Most beaches in Dubrovnik are pebble or rocky rather than sandy, so water shoes are highly recommended for children.
If you’re staying several days, it’s worth mixing easy city beaches with one quieter beach or island day trip.
Sunset Beach in Lapad is usually the easiest and most convenient family beach in Dubrovnik.
The whole Lapad area feels calmer and more practical for families than the busy Old Town. It’s easy to combine beach time with dinner, sunset walks, or an indoor activity nearby like Puzzle Punks Escape Room in Lapad.
If you want to base more of your family time here, see our full Lapad guide.
Copacabana Beach is one of the best Dubrovnik beaches for older kids who want more than just swimming.
The beach itself is pebbly, but the atmosphere is fun and family-oriented during summer.
Sveti Jakov is one of Dubrovnik’s most beautiful beaches and usually much less crowded than Banje Beach.
The catch is access: it’s about a 20-minute walk from Old Town followed by quite a few stairs down to the beach. Because of that, it’s usually easier with bigger kids than toddlers or strollers.
Banje Beach is the classic “swim next to Dubrovnik’s city walls” experience.
The downside is that Banje gets very crowded in summer. Early mornings or late afternoons are usually much more pleasant for families.
Bellevue Beach is a small cove popular for swimming, cliff jumping, and snorkeling.
This beach combines your classic Dubrovnik rocky beach and area with rocks for cliff jumping. If you need a combination that will please both the listtle and the big kids, this is it. Older kids often love it.
If your kids are dreaming about sand, Šunj Beach on Lopud Island is the classic Dubrovnik family day trip.
Unlike most Dubrovnik beaches, Šunj is actually sandy, which makes it especially popular with families. It works best as a half-day or full-day trip rather than a quick beach stop.
The best Dubrovnik itinerary with kids balances sightseeing with swimming, shade, snacks, and one fun break each day. Instead of trying to “see everything,” plan each day around one main sight, one kid-friendly activity, and one easy win like ice cream, beach time, or a sunset view. Keep in mind your energy levels, heat, and how much walking your kids can realistically handle.
For a general city plan, you can also read our full 3 days in Dubrovnik itinerary and adapt it using the family tips below.
A good 2-day Dubrovnik family itinerary includes one early Old Town morning, one island or nature escape, and one relaxed day in Lapad or Babin Kuk. This gives you the classic Dubrovnik highlights without turning the trip into a forced march in flip-flops.
Day 1: Old Town early + Lokrum Island in the afternoon
Start your first day early in Dubrovnik Old Town before the heat and crowds build up.
Day 2: Lapad, beach time, and a fun indoor break
Use your second day for a slower, more local-feeling side of Dubrovnik. Lapad and Babin Kuk are great with kids because they have promenades, beaches, cafés, playground-style stops, and more space than Old Town.
The best 3-day Dubrovnik itinerary with kids gives you one Old Town day, one relaxed Lapad beach day, and one bigger adventure day. This is usually a better pace for families than trying to squeeze everything into two very full days.
Day 1: Old Town + City Walls + Lokrum Island
Follow the Old Town and Lokrum plan above. Start early, keep breaks frequent, and use Lokrum as the afternoon escape from crowds and stone-street heat.
Day 2: Lapad + beach + escape room + sunset
Spend the day in Lapad and Babin Kuk. Mix promenade walks, beach time, ice cream, and an indoor activity like Puzzle Punks Escape Room in Lapad when everyone needs a break from the sun.
Day 3: Choose one “big fun day”
Pick the option that best fits your children’s age, energy, and tolerance for boats, heat, and walking.
The best family itinerary in Dubrovnik depends heavily on your children’s age. Toddlers, school-age kids, and teens usually need very different pacing.
Dubrovnik is much more fun with kids when you plan around energy levels, not just sightseeing lists.
When it rains in Dubrovnik, families should focus on indoor activities, short museums, cafés, and low-effort plans. Old Town stone can get slippery after rain, so this is not the best time to force a long outdoor sightseeing route.
Good rainy day options with kids include:
For more bad-weather ideas, read our full guide to what to do in Dubrovnik when it rains.
Dubrovnik is especially good with teens because it offers history, views, beaches, island trips, adventure activities, and interactive indoor experiences. Older kids usually enjoy having a mix of independence, challenge, and something that does not feel like “another old building.”
Best activities in Dubrovnik with teens include:
Old Town is beautiful and charming, but we usually wouldn’t recommend staying there with kids.
Parking near the Old Town is notoriously difficult, even for locals with permits. If you are traveling with luggage, a stroller, groceries, or tired children, it is much easier to stay somewhere with parking nearby.
Old Town accommodation is also expensive and often includes lots of stairs. The area gets very crowded in summer, and because many buildings are hundreds of years old, sound insulation is not always great. You may hear tourists having the time of their lives in nearby bars while your child is very much not having bedtime.
Old Town is wonderful to visit with kids, but for staying overnight, most families will be more comfortable outside the city walls.
Local tip: stay close enough to visit Old Town easily, but not directly inside it. Your legs, your luggage, and your children will thank you.
The best area to stay in Dubrovnik with kids is usually Lapad.
Lapad feels like a second, more modern city center. It has wider spaces, easier parking, many hotels and apartments, city beaches, restaurants, cafés, grocery shops, and playgrounds.
It is one of the most kid-friendly neighborhoods in Dubrovnik because families can combine beach time, relaxed walks, food stops, and easy access to Old Town without staying inside the busiest part of the city.
For more detailed info on Lapad and why it is a great place to visit in Dubrovnik with kids, check out our full guide to Lapad.
Yes, Dubrovnik is a great destination for families with kids, especially school-age children and teens. Families can enjoy the car-free Old Town, City Walls, Lokrum Island, beaches, boat trips, short museums, and interactive indoor activities. The main things to plan around are summer heat, Old Town stairs, and peak-season crowds.
The best age to visit Dubrovnik with kids is 5 years and up. School-age children and teens enjoy walking the city walls, boat trips, beaches, and adventure activities. Toddlers can still visit, but parents should expect lots of stairs, cobblestone streets, and limited stroller access in the Old Town.
Dubrovnik is partly stroller-friendly, but not everywhere. Stradun, Lapad, promenades, beaches, and modern neighborhoods are easier with a stroller, while Old Town side streets and the City Walls have many stairs and uneven stone. For sightseeing inside the Old Town, a baby carrier is often easier than a stroller.
Most families need 3 to 4 days in Dubrovnik with kids. This gives you time for one Old Town and City Walls day, one beach or Lapad day, and one island trip, boat trip, or relaxed indoor activity. Two days can work with older kids, but younger families will enjoy Dubrovnik more at a slower pace.
The best things to do in Dubrovnik with kids include exploring the Old Town, visiting Lokrum Island, relaxing on family-friendly beaches, taking a cable car ride, and enjoying interactive indoor activities like an escape room during hot afternoons. A mix of sightseeing and play works best for children of all ages.
When Dubrovnik is too hot or rainy, choose short museums, the Aquarium, cafés, cinema, shopping center breaks, or an indoor escape room in Lapad. Puzzle Punks Escape Room is a good option for families with kids, teens, and groups who want something active, air-conditioned, and away from the Old Town crowds.
Lapad is usually the best area to stay in Dubrovnik with kids. It has beaches, a promenade, playgrounds, restaurants, cafés, family-friendly hotels, and easy transport to the Old Town. It is flatter, calmer, and more practical for families than staying inside the Old Town walls.
Yes, Puzzle Punks Escape Room in Lapad is suitable for families with kids and works best as a shared family activity. Younger children can enjoy the game with help from parents, while older kids can take on more of the puzzle-solving themselves. Dubrovnik Legends is the best family-friendly choice, while Save King’s Landing is better for experienced players who want a tougher challenge.
Dubrovnik is absolutely worth visiting with kids, as long as you plan your days with a little local strategy. The city gives families a rare mix of history, beaches, islands, boat rides, views, animals, playground-style stops, and fun indoor activities.
The best approach is simple: explore early, slow down in the middle of the day, and save relaxed family activities for the afternoon or evening.
Whether you are visiting with toddlers, school-age kids, or teens, Dubrovnik has enough variety to keep the whole family happy — especially if you leave space for gelato, beach breaks, and the occasional “we are not climbing one more staircase” moment.
If you try one of these ideas, leave a comment with your kids’ ages and what they loved most. It helps other families plan better.

Thank you for your recommendations.
We are staying in Lapad (April 2024) and wondered if any hotels offered a day pass to use their pools? Thank you
Hello. Not sure if they have something like this, since we never used them. But if any might have, then it should be the Valamar Hotels in Babin Kuk. They also have a playground for kids, but that one is just for their guests ( for example, we, as locals, cannot go there with our kids.. )
…which is discriminatory and most likely against the law, but who are we to fight the big hotel corporation Valamar?
Huge thank you for this guide. We have arrived in our hotel in Babin Kuk today and look forward to exploring x
Hi Heather, glad you found our guide helpful. Hope you had great holidays!
