Dubrovnik’s Old Town is compact, so it can feel very crowded when several cruise ships arrive at the same time. Before choosing your main Old Town day, check the current cruise schedule and plan your busiest sightseeing outside peak arrival hours.
Local tip: If the schedule looks heavy, do Lapad, Lokrum, the beach, or an indoor activity during the busiest hours, then return to Old Town later in the day.
With kids, the best Old Town window is early morning (before the day heats up and before tour groups peak). The second-best is late afternoon/evening, when it cools down and the light is gorgeous.
Parking is limited, expensive, and stressful around the Old Town. If you’re staying outside, it’s usually easier to take a bus or taxi/Uber and save your energy for exploring.
Dubrovnik Old Town is beautiful, but it is not stroller-perfect. The main street, Stradun, is flat, but many side streets have steep stone stairs and uneven surfaces.

Old Town Dubrovnik is best with kids early in the morning or later in the afternoon, when the streets are cooler and less crowded. The area is car-free, full of fortress views, and easy to turn into a “castle hunt” for younger children.

The place is very scenic and abundant with postcard photo material. Our favourite picture spots are Pile Bay with Lovrijenac fort, Porporela pier next to Old Harbour and the stone bridge on Ploče Gate.

Good to know: The full walk can take around 1.5 hours with children, so you do not have to complete the entire loop.
The Dubrovnik City Walls are one of the most memorable family activities in Dubrovnik, especially for kids who enjoy castles, cannons, sea views, and real-life history. The walk is beautiful but exposed, so timing matters.
The walk takes around 1.5 hrs (1 hr for adults) and is included in the Dubrovnik pass. You don’t have to do the whole loop if you get tired, as there are multiple entrances to the city walls.
If going on the Dubrovnik city walls with kids, we recommend starting at Ploče gate, not Pile gate, for numerous reasons:
The best time to visit Dubrovnik city walls in the summer is definitely early morning or just before close.
Since there is a lot of walking (and probably sun) involved, make sure to have lots of water (expensive to buy on the city walls) and potentially some snacks for the little ones.

Good to know: Very useful after the City Walls. Strategic gelato is a valid parenting technique.
Peppino’s is one of the most popular gelato stops in Dubrovnik Old Town. It is close enough to Ploče Gate to work well as a post-walls reward, especially if your kids need motivation to finish the walk.

Good to know: Lokrum is one of the best hot-day activities in Dubrovnik with kids because it offers shade, swimming spots, wildlife, and space to move.
Lokrum Island is a short boat ride from Dubrovnik Old Port and feels like a nature reset after the busy stone streets of Old Town. Families love it because kids can spot peacocks, explore shady paths, swim, and take a break from crowds.
The boat for Lokrum goes from the Old port and is only a 15 min ride away from Old Town. You can check the boat schedule online. Lokrum is a real natural paradise, a UNESCO-protected nature reserve ,which makes it a great day trip destination for families.
This beautiful island is a perfect escape from the city heat and crowds since it’s filled with trees and shady pathways, with plenty of room to move around.
Your kids will love to see the peacocks running freely around. They are used to people, so maybe you can even make some new friends as they are not too shy.
There is plenty to see on Lokrum, so you easily plan to spend half a day here. Besides visiting the botanical gardens and the Monastery, our favourite is the exhibition on Lokrum curse and King Richard the Lionheart shipwreck.

Go swimming in the dead sea, snorkelling and exploring the sea life, play in the kids park or just hide in the shades of the forest and enjoy the serenity of this island. Indeed it is a true gem & our favourite thing to do in Dubrovnik with kids!

Good to know: These are short, easy indoor stops, not full half-day museums.
Although modest, the Aquarium’s cool location in the stone vaults of St. John’s Fortress makes it a nice escape from the crowds and heat of the city. Expect to spend 20-30 minutes observing diverse Adriatic flora and fauna such as lobsters, octopus, seahorses, sea urchins, sea cucumbers, shells and crabs.
The Natural History Museum is another good choice for younger kids. It is bigger than the Aquarium, easy to visit, and has different animals on display. This works well when you need a short indoor break without committing to a long museum visit.

Good to know: Come a few minutes before 12:00
Every day exactly at 12:00, when the bell strikes, hundreds of pigeons land on Gundulic square (old town market place) & wait for their lunch. Come a bit earlier to see them nesting on the rooftops and eagerly awaiting. The locals bring a bucket of grains and the entire scene is spectacular to see.

Good to know: Cats are well taken care of
There are plenty of cats everywhere, they are friendly and love to be pet. The cats in Old Town are well cared for and healthy enough so you can feel comfortable interacting with them.
Fun local fact: Dubrovnik cats are one of the oldest residents of the city as they were introduced in the 14th century when Dubrovnik was a major trading port between Europe and the Ottoman empire. The cats greatly helped fight the plague by killing the rats that spread the disease. That’s the main reason why the cats are well fed and respected!

Pile Park has been completely renovated and recently opened. It’s a brilliant new playground right next to Dubrovnik’s Old Town.
The park features a unique “mini Dubrovnik” play structure inspired by the city’s fortifications, along with shaded paths, seating, greenery, and space for families to relax while kids climb and explore. There’s also an interactive Ruđer Bošković installation under the bridge, which adds an educational twist to the visit

If you are looking for shade, go to Gradac park, that is a 10 minute stroll from the Old Town. When you walk up the hill, you will have beautiful views of Fort Lovrijenac.
There is a brand new playground planned (currently under construction) and it is a nice escape from the city hustle and a good place to let your kids roam around free. At the beginning of the park is a small fountain with turtles swimming in it. The forest provides enough shade for a pleasant walk during a hot summer day, while soaking up the view of the Adriatic.

For a breathtaking view of the city, take a cable car ride up to Mount Srd. The ride is quick and takes only a few minutes, but it offers an unforgettable panoramic view of Dubrovnik’s old town and the Adriatic Sea. Your kids will love the cable car ride and the views from the top.

Good to know: Adventurous activity that might get you a bit dusty. Don’t wear your nicest clothes.
Older kids (10+) might enjoy a more adventurous Dubrovnik activity. Take them to Buggy Safari, on top of Srdj, a thrilling ride where you get to explore ancient fortresses and the countryside.

Good to know: Even small children can go (in tandem), provided they are brave enough.
Zipline on top of Srdj mountain offers breathtaking views together with an adrenaline rush. It is a family-friendly activity suitable even for smaller children, as they get all the necessary gear and safety training.

Many films are shown in the original language with Croatian subtitles, but always check the current programme first. This works best with older kids and teens, or younger children who can comfortably stay up later.
If you have more than two days in Dubrovnik, it is worth adding one easy family trip outside the city. The best options near Dubrovnik with kids are island beaches, countryside activities, caves, and adventure parks.
Choose only one bigger outing per day. With children, a slower day trip is usually much better than trying to squeeze in three “quick stops.”

Take a 1 hour boat ride from Gruž port to Lopud island (check the daily departures schedule) . No cars are allowed on the island, so you can truly relax & enjoy the nature. Take a stroll to the other side of the island (or hire a golf cart) in order to discover the best sandy beach in the whole county – Šunj beach.
Kids will love this beautiful sandy beach, because it is very shallow so they will have plenty of space to run and splash around. Take snorkelling gear, rent a kayak or pedal boats, swim and dive or just hide in the shade of parasols or the local bar, while your kids roam around joyously.
This family friendly beach is the locals’ favourite place to escape Dubrovnik in the summer.

Copacabana Beach is one of the best Dubrovnik beaches for older kids who want more than just swimming.
The beach itself is pebbly, but the atmosphere is fun and family-oriented during summer.
Sveti Jakov is one of Dubrovnik’s most beautiful beaches and usually much less crowded than Banje Beach.
The catch is access: it’s about a 20-minute walk from Old Town followed by quite a few stairs down to the beach. Because of that, it’s usually easier with bigger kids than toddlers or strollers.
Banje Beach is the classic “swim next to Dubrovnik’s city walls” experience.
The downside is that Banje gets very crowded in summer. Early mornings or late afternoons are usually much more pleasant for families.
Bellevue Beach is a small cove popular for swimming, cliff jumping, and snorkeling.
This beach combines your classic Dubrovnik rocky beach and area with rocks for cliff jumping. If you need a combination that will please both the little and the big kids, this is it. Older kids often love it.

Old Town is wonderful to visit with kids, but for staying overnight, most families will be more comfortable outside the city walls.
Local tip: stay close enough to visit Old Town easily, but not directly inside it. Your legs, your luggage, and your children will thank you.

Hello. Not sure if they have something like this, since we never used them. But if any might have, then it should be the Valamar Hotels in Babin Kuk. They also have a playground for kids, but that one is just for their guests ( for example, we, as locals, cannot go there with our kids.. )
…which is discriminatory and most likely against the law, but who are we to fight the big hotel corporation Valamar?
